Design contest winners!

30023

Well here we are. After a 100 entries, 16 finalists and thousands of votes we have come upon the winners for Wordde’s first design contest. Before you scroll to see who won, please note that this was not an easy task for us. Some finalists got an amazing amount of support from fans, friends and family while others fell short on votes but turned in designs that showcased an amazing level of skill and talent. As creatives ourselves we know that it stings not to win, but please know that no matter the results here – you are awesome and truly talented!

That being said, the three criteria we took into account were:

  1. Design skill – The skill required to create the piece. Design elements like contrast, alignment, repetition were all considered.

2. Design Aesthetic – How did the piece come together? Was it cohesive? Did it tell a story?

3. Claps – This is self explanatory. We kept this section because at the end of the day a good designer needs to be able to market themselves and their work. However since this is first and foremost a design contest and designers have varying ranges of social circles, we did not want this to be the sole criteria in selecting a winner.

Hope this clears up any questions in terms of how the winners were selected. We would like to thank everyone who entered the contest and cannot express how much we appreciate their support.

This is the first of many contests we plan to have. So, please keep creating.

Now, without further ado…drumroll please…here are the winners of Wordde’s first design contest.

First prize of $75 – The Slippery Slope by Harshitha Suresh

Total Claps – 40,504

Judges’ comments – Good design can speak volumes with simplicity. This piece stood out because it captured an emotion that all of us in the digital age are extremely familiar with, and it did so with elegance and minimalism. The detailing on the palms that tone the intricate muscles of the fingers are particularly impressive, and the lines that congeal to create the fluid nature of the screen remind us that designers have the ability to craft all forms of matter with the delicate strokes of their brushes, pencils, and pens (both traditional and digital).

Second Prize of $50 – That Undeciding Phase by Manisha Prasad

Total Claps – 1,483

Judge’s comments – Every once in a while we come across a piece of design that tells a story or captures a moment perfectly. We were beyond impressed when we received this entry. Again, like Slippery Slope, words are not needed to describe what is happening here or the plain sense of confusion that the girl is facing. We have all experienced this confusion, this moment, this indecision – especially artists. Design wise, we appreciated the use of contrast to add depth to the girls clothes and backpack however our favorite part was her mind visualizing all the wonderful things she could do with her life. This piece may be titled ‘Undecided’ but our decision of second place was unanimous.

Third Prize 0f $25 – Melancholic Summer by Miscira

Total Claps – 51,616

Judges’ comments – Animation is not easy, neither is texturing and shading. This piece does all three so well it makes us want to go out and eat some melons instead of judging a contest. We enjoyed the whimsical nature of the piece and were stunned at the amount of applause it received from social media followers and website visitors.

There you have it, our 3 winners for our first design contest.

Honorable Mentions

Special prize of $15 – The Spiderman by Anuthara Ayyaswamy

Total Claps – 60,142!

Judges’ comments – We wanted to give this post a special mention because of the huge amount of website engagement and applause it received. Bravo! We loved the energy and action of this piece from the get go. Clearly from the amount of applause it received we were not the only ones who thought it was amazing. Being big fans of Spiderman ourselves it was a tough choice not selecting this one for the top 3, which is why we decided to give this piece a special mention.
